Bucks County Community College invites the public to meet its newest published professor, Sarahlyn Bruck, as she debuts her novel Designer You on Wednesday, October 24, on the Newtown campus.
Bruck, who teaches literature and composition, will read excerpts from the novel from 11 a.m. to noon in the Orangery building. Bruck has been at the at the public, two-year college since 2008. Her debut novel was published in late August through Crooked Cat Books.
Designer You follows the narrator, Pam, who becomes a young widow after her husband dies in a freak accident. Pam must try to save the couple’s DIY business and repair her relationship with her grieving daughter in the aftermath of her husband’s death.
Language and Literature Department Dean Nicole Tracey pointed out that Bucks students benefit from faculty who are actively practicing the craft that they teach.
“When professors publish a piece of their own work, it is not only an accomplishment for them, but a wonderful opportunity for their students to see how the work done in class translates into the real world,” said Tracey. “It helps students understand the value of writing and the creative process, transforming seemingly anonymous authors into approachable people who can share how they crafted their work, including both the struggles and victories that allowed them to reach this impressive pinnacle.”
Bruck lives in Philadelphia with her husband and daughter, and their dog, Jazzy.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by Bucks County Community College’s Language and Literature Department. The campus is located at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., 18940. For further information, call 215-968-8103.
