It's been a busy semester in the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. In addition to five Roundtables, two Faculty Showcases, two Best Practices presentations, and two outside speakers co-sponsored with the Women's Center and the Teaching and Learning with Technology Roundtable, the Center has been booked for 63 other meetings and events including Core Assessment Workshops, Assessment Task Force meetings, Advising Specialist meetings, New Faculty Orientation sessions, Women's History Month planning, meetings with transfer institutions, Integration of Knowledge Institutes, and others. A report on the activities of the Center will be presented at the May Board of Trustees meeting.
Your Faculty Center Advisory Board has already begun the process of planning next year's events. Remember that your ideas for programming are welcome. Part-time Faculty Honored
Through a grant from the Bucks County Community College Foundation, 15 part-time faculty were honored at a luncheon on April 22. The part-timers were selected for excellence in teaching and for their special contributions to their departments and the College. The honorees each received a certificate of merit, a lapel pin, and a $100 award.
They are:
Department of the Arts
Edward Ferdinand An artist/performer on the piano, Ed has been at BCCC since the 1980s, consistently demonstrating the unique ability and the patience needed to bring discipline and growth to every student he teaches.
Cristine Martino , the heart of the BCCC jewelry program for 15 years, curates the annual High School Art Exhibition, advises students, reviews portfolios, participates in student orientation, and recently designed renovations to the studio.
Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences
Joseph Colombo joined the Bucks faculty after having completed a career as an electronics engineer and physicist. Joe has taught a full complement of philosophy courses, receiving laudatory student evaluations for his dedication.
Linda Kanner teaches sociology, psychology, and social services. She coordinates the Social Services program of study and teaches distance learning courses. She is highly regarded by students and faculty alike.
James Fillman , a faculty member since 1993, is a versatile teacher of sociology and humanities. He has served as an advising specialist and College counselor to students at the main campus as well as at the Upper Bucks campus.
Department of Business Studies
Glenn Hains , in addition to teaching, has worked on new course development and serves as a member of the Paralegal Advisory Board. He has also taught Continuing Education legal courses to our faculty and to local attorneys.
Lyn Huttemann has been part of the Office Administration faculty for more than 20 years. She was a member of the first Core Assessment team and designed a number of learning assessments used by all faculty in that Area.
Department of Health, Physical Education, and Nursing
David Briggs , at the College for 18 years, teaches both Self Defense and Tai Chi. He advises the Martial Arts Club and has given demonstrations at Wellness Week, Open House, and In-Service programs for various employee groups.
Department of Language and Literature
Denise Gilbert is a real asset to her students, to her Department, and to the College. We honor her for being an excellent teacher, one who provides much-needed added support for BCCC's developmental students.
Joseph Nissly has made BCCC his home for the last six years. We honor him for his creativity and dedication, his organizational and dramatic skills, his unflagging energy, good humor, and commitment to his students.
Donna Tobin has been one of our most respected part-time faculty members for many years. We honor her because she is an exceptional and talented teacher who is dedicated to her students and has a genuine respect for them.
Library Services
Poonam Sood was chosen for this award for her exemplary service to the College for more than 10 years. She is extremely patient, kind, and welcoming to students and supplies them with tools to develop lifelong information skills.
Department of Math and Computer/Information Sciences
Donna Acquavella has been teaching both math and computer science at BCCC since 1993. She has also done extensive course and model project development, and she is also active in assessment and team teaching projects.
Janine Termine , at BCCC since 1994, currently teaches students in a learning community in collaboration with the Dept. of Language and Literature. She is a dedicated teacher, extending herself for her students and her department.
Department of Science and Technology
Dr. Charles Hardy has been a leader in bringing technology to the classroom in Anatomy and Physiology. He was among the first to use WebCT for an on campus course, and in the fall, he will introduce a hybrid section of A & P.
New Faculty Orientation
BCCC's New Faculty Orientation Series will draw to a close on May 14 with a luncheon at the Summer Kitchen Restaurant in celebration of the end of the semester. Current participants in the program include Cynthia Barris , Health/P.E./Nursing; Dr. Hendrik Booraem , Behav./Social Sciences; John Dilcher , Business Studies; Deborah Ferrara , Behav./Social Sciences; Linda Garcia , Health/ P.E./Nursing; Lori Grady , Business Studies; Linda McCann , Library; Cameron McMillan , Arts; Shawn Queeney , Arts; Jack Ready , Behav./Social Sciences; Dr. Mehdi Salsali, Arts; John Sheridan , Arts; Dr. Celia Shiffer , Lang. & Lit.; Ronald Vaughn , Business Studies.
The Orientation series grew out of the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. It now consists of both social events and discussion sessions. Three times during the year, the new faculty are invited to a luncheon at which they can get to know one another and also have a chance to meet and talk with the President and the Vice President/Dean of Academic Affairs. This year's discussion sessions included presentations on Student Services, Advising, Distance Learning, Technology Resources , Classroom Assessment Techniques , and Best Practices in Creating Effective Reading Assignments. New Faculty from the last five years were also honored at a Dean's Reception on February 19.

Attending/Presenting at Conferences:
Dr. Priscilla Rice and Leah Robinson , Health/Phys. Ed./ Nursing, attended the National Physical Education Convention in New Orleans .
Earl Arrowood , Business Studies, gave a presentation to the chef's group at the North East Regional conference. He and his students also participated in the Gourmet Getaway Spring Sensation on March 25 at the Doylestown Courthouse Rotunda.
Tom Goldman attended the North East Regional meeting of the American Association for Paralegal Education and presented web surveys.
Charles Beem attended the Phi Theta Kappa conference in Minnesota and the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges in Harrisburg , for the recognition of the Pennsylvania All Academic Team.
Dr. Ray O'Brien , Behav. & Soc. Sciences, attended the American Association of Geographers Convention in Philadelphia and served on a panel.
Dr. Lois Gilmore , Language and Literature, had a paper accepted at a conference in California on the topic of “War and Gender.”
Publications and Exhibitions:
Original comic book art from the collection of Charles Viera , Dept. of the Arts, was featured in an exhibition March 26 – April 20 at the Gruss Center of Visual Arts in Lawrenceville , NJ .
Robert Bense , Language and Literature Dept., was the featured poet at a March 25 poetry reading at BCCC.
Work by Emily Brett Lukens, Department of the Arts, was on exhibit in Philadelphia April 16 and 17.
Jim Richard , Behav. & Social Sciences, published an article in Consulting Psychology Journal on creative problem solving for executives.
Jeff Baumeister, Arts , published an article entitled, “Herbie Hancock's Piano Solo, United Blues” in Downbeat.
Lou Hoelzle , Math/Computer & Info Science, co-authored a new edition of a mathematics text published by McGraw-Hill.
Mark Sfirri , Arts, and students Doug Jones, Kim Kulow-Jones, and Jake Antonelli had pictures of their woodwork published in 400 Wood Boxes – The Fine Art of Containment and Concealment. One of Mark's pieces is also pictured in The Maker's Hand – American Studio Furniture, 1940-1990.
Mark Gindele , Business Studies, published an article in Defense AT&L: March April 2004 entitled, “The Definitive Cost Elements of Subpar Quality in the Navy, The ALRE Flight Safe Program.”
Earl Arrowood and Peter Salemno , Business Studies, judged the Pennsylvania Association of Skills USA District 2 Competition held at Middle Bucks Institute of Technology.
His portrait of Victor Hugo won Jack Gevins , Arts, an award from the Victor Hugo Society.
Selected works of Alan Powell, Arts, Chronicles of a Seeker, were shown at Gallery 31 North, March 14 through April 28.
Dr. Judith Switzer and Ed Ferdinand , Arts, have been nominated to “Who's Who Among American's Teachers.”
Karl Carter, Academic Computing/Arts, submitted glassware that won second place at the 2004 Philadelphia Flower Show.
Myles Kelleher, Behav. & Social Sciences, will publish a book this spring called Social Problems in a Free Society.
Leah Robinson, Health/Phys Ed/Nursing , published an article in the February issue of Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, entitled “The Effects of Land Versus Aquatic Plyometrics in Power, Torque, Velocity, and Muscle Soreness in Women.”
Blaine Greenfield , Business Studies, had his marketing class featured in an article in the Bucks County Courier Times.
Joan Weiss , Judy Toland, and Walt Wiesenhutter, Business Studies , served as team advisors to Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) teams which won first place (Newtown Team) and first runner up (Upper Campus Team) in a regional competition.
Professional Development Opportunities
FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR PROGRAM :
The annual Fulbright competition opens March 1 for lecturing and research grants in 140 countries. The program called Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is one of the newer offerings. It provides two- to six-week grants and has a rolling deadline. Contact Rebecca Stevenson , x8065, for information.
DEVRY UNIVERSITY EDUCATOR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM:
As a part of its commitment to lifelong learning, DeVry University offers fellowships to faculty and academic administrators. These fellowships cover tuition and any required application fee for educators taking up to nine semester credit hours at the graduate level and up to 12 semester credit hours at the undergraduate level. The Keynote Speaker this year is Dr. Willard R. Daggett, President of the International Center for Leadership in Education. In addition to the Keynote, the program will feature 32 presentations by representatives of 18 institutions from 8 states.
