Students are required to provide their own digital camera (minimum 5-6 megapixel), memory cards, flash/jump drives and other storage media for the duration of the course.
Students should be aware that additional hours beyond those provided during class are both expected and required for the completion of assignments.

- VI. Catalog Course Description
- Students will continue to explore the potential of digital photographic imagery and will concentrate on advanced image editing methods. A central aim of the course will be creating a portfolio of high quality printed images. The course will additionally emphasize the use of photography as an artistic medium.

Course Learning Goals
- Course Students will:
- demonstrate and refine their ability to capture images, primarily via use of a digital camera;
- develop advanced image editing skills and techniques using appropriate software, primarily Photoshop, to attain optimal print quality, color balance, focus, saturation, curves, and brightness and contrast;
- practice advanced editing techniques of masking, combining digital images, creating multiple images, etc;
- develop the skills and techniques specific to the printing of digital photographs, including calibration, color management, archival, and other presentation/printing concerns;
- demonstrate their creative, expressive, and aesthetic skills through the production of digital photographic imagery;
- assess their own and other students' technical and aesthetic proficiency through the critical examination of their own and other students' work via individual or class "critiques."

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
The course will provide students with the advanced methods and techniques necessary to produce digitally-generated photographic imagery. The course will continue the discussion of the materials and terminology, begun in VAFA110 Digital Photography Fundamentals. A progression of topics will follow, including advanced camera operation and image capture, advanced image manipulation/editing skills and techniques, discussion and demonstration of printing issues, needs and methods and general aesthetic/image-making concerns. As a supplement to the technical information, this course will further explore the idea and appreciation of the photograph as both a purely aesthetic object and as vehicle of visual communication.
The course will culminate in the production of a final portfolio of high quality printed images in a variety of sizes, from 8” x 10” to 20” x 25” or larger.

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Course Course learning goals will be assessed through quizzes and photographs created for class projects and the final portfolio. These images will be assessed through individual and class critiques addressing the technical quality and aesthetic value of the work. In addition, students will be required to complete several short writing assignments including an artist statement and a critical assessment of the work of an established photographer.
