- In addition to class studio time, students work five hours outside of class each week under the supervision of a lab assistant. Safe shop practices are emphasized.

- This course introduces the ancient art of lost wax metal casting and its contemporary application to the production of fine jewelry or small sculptural objects.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- design from concepts a well-crafted cast piece of jewelry or object;
- demonstrate an understanding of the technical skills and ability to transform ideas using the required casting tools and processes;
- employ safe studio practices and tool maintenance; and
- analyze projects through critiques, oral presentations, and discussions.

- cast object carved from a single block of wax
- cast two objects that fit together or support each other
- make a cast object to fit a non-metal object
- incorporate casting with traditional fabrication

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Course learning goals are assessed with group critiques of all assignments, based on the successful design, execution, and completion of specific projects, and on the appropriate use of tools and shop safety practices.
- At least two individual critiques with the instructor are held each semester, to assess projects using the above criteria and to review students' overall progress.
