V. Other Pertinent Information
Students work 5 hours outside of class each week under the supervision of a Lab Assistant. Students complete a minimum of three (3) well-conceived and well-crafted sculptures. There is a studio supply cost for this course. Safe shop practices are emphasized.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course combines the study and examination of process-based forms and figurative based-forms. Students are introduced to drawing and modeling the human body. Students are introduced to various tools, materials, and techniques in the application of design to tactile forms in space.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. complete a minimum of three (3) well-conceived and well-crafted sculptures;
    2. develop an ability to express ideas with a sculptural vocabulary;
    3. develop an understanding of technical proficiency with the tools and techniques of sculpture;
    4. fabricate using steel, wood, Plexiglas, and/or plaster;
    5. apply the basic techniques of modeling clay, mold making, and casting;
    6. plan and complete work on time and in a presentable manner; and
    7. analyze projects through critiques, oral presentations, and discussions.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. develop a greater sense of the structure and design of the human form through the additive modeling process;
    2. explain and practice the subtractive method of making sculpture, employing techniques, such as carving;
    3. explain and practice the additive method of making sculpture, employing various materials;
    4. explore ideas through model making and drawing;
    5. identify and explore the properties of various sculptural materials;
    6. demonstrate and apply the appropriate use of manual hand tools;
    7. demonstrate and apply the appropriate use of power tools;
    8. identify and explore the use of various finishing materials;
    9. create sculptural molds and make casts;
    10. critique their own work, as well as the work of their peers; and
    11. demonstrate safe shop practices.
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    1. Course learning goals are assessed via group critiques of all projects, based on the successful design, execution, and completion of assigned projects.
    2. At least two individual critiques with the instructor are held each semester, to assess projects using the above criteria and to review students' overall progress.
    3. Students' portfolios are assessed for aesthetic quality and progress.
