  6. Catalog Course Description

    This course is geared to those who work with people at high risk of becoming HIV+. Participants acquire valuable skills and information for initiating and enhancing HIV disease prevention work with adolescents and adults. New skills are practiced in small group role plays.
  7. Required Course Content and Direction

    1. Learning Goals:

      1. Knowledge of:
        1. history of the HIV disease in our country, special emphasis on social implications of this process.
        2. basic understanding of HIV transmission, HIV disease, and antibody testing.
        3. ways to remove personal and organizational barriers to involvement with HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention.
      2. An overview of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and how this use is related to HIV disease.
      3. Concerns that influence sexuality and behaviors. Explore myths and facts about sexual behaviors of specific high risk populations and approaches to encouraging risk behavior reduction.
      4. Exploration of different cultural issues as they relate to HIV disease and culturally appropriate intervention strategies.

      1. communication skills
      2. methods to assess and explore risk taking behaviors
      3. approaches for negotiating and motivating others to eliminate sexual and/or drug use behaviors that could lead to HIV infection
      4. methods to assist with pre-test decision making
