This is the second course in the Social Services Program. An integrated competency based model is used in the Program. In this model specific skills, knowledge, attitudes, and traits are presented, evaluated, and practiced throughout the Program.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course is a continuation of the Introduction to Social Services. The course focuses on developing an understanding of the fundamental counseling theories, as well as interviewing, assessment and referral skills. SSWK120 competencies and skills will be practiced in class.

  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. Reaction Papers
      1. Each student will write four reaction papers based on the theoretical concepts underlying Social Services work. Reference materials available in the library.
    2. Exercise Notebook
      1. Students will maintain an exercise notebook in which they will write the answers to structured interviewing exercises.
    3. Service Work and Journal
      1. Students will complete 15 hours of service work in a non-profit agency. They will maintain self-evaluative journals of this time focusing on issues of personal development, skill development, and knowledge of the area in which they are working. They will also maintain appropriate contact sheets, regarding their contacts with clients.
    4. Interview assignments
      1. Each student will conduct interviews in class during the semester. These interviews will be evaluated by the instructor and by classmates. Students will also become aware of a number of different intake interview forms and assessment tools.
    5. Case Study
      1. Each student will develop a case study of a fictitious client, using intake and assessment forms, delineating a theoretical foundation for possible intervention(s), listing referral resources, and summarizing the evaluation of the client.

    An acceptable text will be used. See Course Format. Students will use professional journals found in the Library and other books for research into the theories. They may also use resources available on the Internet for research into career opportunities, educational institutions, and other relevant materials. Handouts on current information and activities in the field may be given by the instructor.
