  6. Catalog Course Description

    This course surveys recreational activities, facilities of a model community, and agencies that administer recreational programs. It examines trends and philosophies for leisure, outdoor and indoor recreation, and camping. A 5-day overnight camping experience is required. Lifetime health benefits related to proper nutrition and exercise physiology are examined.
  7. Required Course Content and Direction

    1. Learning Goals:

      1. Introduce the student to the major aspects of recreation leadership. The general concepts of governance, community inter-relationships, policy formation, procedure development, staffing, programming, financing, legal responsibilities and evaluation techniques will be surveyed.
      2. Explore the nature of leisure time, its value, how people use or abuse leisure and the responsibility society has to educate its’ members for leisure.
      3. Practical application of leadership theories and skills during a class sponsored camping trip.
      4. The student will discuss the concepts of leisure time, recreation, education for leisure, the threat of leisure and the values of an enriching leisure experience.
      5. The student will show in writing an understanding of community recreation organizations, their philosophies, policies, procedures, program development, financing, staffing and evaluation techniques.
      6. The student will visit and examine the organization and administration of selected organizations which sponsor recreation services and programs.
      7. The student will study and discuss the criteria for the selection and evaluation of activities to be included in a recreation program.

      9. The student will practice individual and group leadership skills in camping such as: shelters, orienteering, cooking, campfire programs, adventure programs, spiritual experiences, and camp sanitation.
