This course will not satisfy the general elective category for students who entered their program of study in or after the 2007 Fall semester.

Prealgebra is considered a developmental course. A comprehensive departmental final examination is included in this course. Study skills are also emphasized.

Students who wish to continue with the course MATH095, Basic Algebra, must complete MATH090 with a grade of C or better.

Calculator use is NOT permitted for any part of this course.

VI. Catalog Course Description

This course provides preparation for study in algebra. Topics include a review of basic arithmetic skills, fractions, and decimals, an introduction to signed numbers, variables, equation solving, and data analysis. Transferability is determined by transfer institution.

VII. Required Course Content and Direction

Students will:

1. perform mathematical computations involving whole numbers;
2. perform mathematical computations involving signed numbers;
3. perform mathematical computations involving fractions and decimals;
4. analyze and apply mathematical operations in applied problem solving situations;
5. solve basic linear equations in one variable;and
6. analyze data from graphs; calculate mean, median, and mode for a group of values, and solve simple probability problems.

The students apply mathematical concepts and principles to identify and solve problems presented through informal assessment, such as oral communication among students and between teacher and students. Formal assessments consist of open-ended and multiple choice questions reflecting theoretical and applied situations.
