Students participate in an off-campus, hands-on assessment of historic buildings, a key practice area for historic preservation professionals. Students must provide their own transportation to the project site.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course combines classroom study with hands-on field work under the guidance of a historic preservation professional at a chosen site. Real-world experience surveying and assessing a historic building project or other historical site supplements class sessions. Students apply skills of drafting, photography, and writing to complete a class project.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. identify the techniques and technologies available for documenting and surveying historic structures;
    2. apply techniques and technologies used for surveying historic structures in the field to the assessment of an historic building;
    3. prepare a Building Assessment Report for the historic building, including historic research, measured drawings, photography, written observations, and written recommendations for treatment; and
    4. demonstrate an understanding of comprehensive historic building project site assessment.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. introduce the process of assessing a historic site with multiple existing conditions
    2. explore the historic site from technologies to techniques
    3. examine the project site by students, apply processes of assessing historic buildings
    4. assign individual responsibilities to students for group project
    5. conduct field work sessions, including photography, drawing, assessment, and testing
    6. compile student materials (photographs, drawings, written) documentation for assessment report
    7. compose the final report from the student material
    8. present a group assessment project to faculty, SPK (Sigma Pi Kappa Historic Preservation Honor Society) and guests
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    Preservation Site Project students are evaluated by:

    1. class participation and field discussions
    2. contribution to the field work
    3. contribution to the final group project, the Building Assessment Report
    4. participation in group presentation
