  6. Catalog Course Description

    This course introduces the Fire Science student to the fundamentals of the inspection, maintenance, and operation of fire suppression and detection systems. New fire suppression agents and the important characteristics of these agents are covered in this course.
  7. Required Course Content and Direction

    1. Learning Goals:

      1. Course
      2. Students will:
        1. examine the theories of fire suppression and fire extinguishment including a wet, dry, pre-action and deluge sprinkler systems, residential sprinkler technology, and fast response sprinkler systems;
        2. distinguish between the operational characteristics, and the physical and chemical characteristics of various extinguishing agents used in gaseous, wet and dry chemical fire suppression systems, foam agents used at petro-chemical plants;
        3. compare the basic components and operation of smoke, flame and thermal detection/alarm systems; and
        4. identify and distinguish between the various marine fire suppression and detection systems.

      1. the history of fire protection and current theories of fire suppression
      2. portable fire extinguishers
      3. the issue of residential/rapid response sprinkler technology
      4. fire department operations in occupancies protected by a sprinkler system
      5. fire department operations in buildings utilizing standpipe systems
      6. carbon Dioxide extinguishing systems
      7. dry chemical extinguishing systems
      8. wet chemical extinguishing systems
      9. halogenated extinguishing systems
      10. clean agent and water mist extinguishing systems
      11. foam extinguishing systems
      12. smoke, flame and thermal detection systems
      13. marine Fire Suppression systems
      14. health and environmental issues associated with extinguishing systems
