VI. Catalog Course Description
This course provides a non-calculus analysis of applied strength of materials. Topics include: mechanical properties of materials; stress and strain analysis; loading in the design of shafts and beams; shear force and bending moment; axial, shear, deflection of beams; and buckling of columns.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. evaluate the mechanical properties of materials;
    2. analyze and explain the theory behind, and the applications of stress and strain;
    3. examine axial, lateral, and torsional loading in the design and analysis of shafts and beams;
    4. apply the theory learned to the analysis of shear force and bending moment in beams, and to the deflection of beams; and
    5. evaluate and explain the buckling of columns.

    The following topics are presented:

    1. stress and strain analysis
    2. mechanical properties of materials
    3. bearing and bending stresses
    4. axial, lateral, and torsional loading of shafts and beams
    5. shear force and bending moment in beams
    6. deflection of beams
    7. buckling of columns
