Safe shop practices are emphasized. In addition to class studio time, students work 5 hours outside of class each week in the woodshop under the supervision of a Lab Assistant or at home. -
Catalog Course Description
This studio course focuses on design, drawing, and execution of curved forms and laminating techniques. Students employ bending and veneering techniques in the design and construction of a piece of furniture. Emphasis is on a variety of joinery, bending, and veneering techniques. -
Required Course Content and Direction

Learning Goals:
- Course Students will:
- demonstrate an understanding and vocabulary of bending and veneering techniques;
- demonstrate an understanding of the design potential of bent forms;
- draw bent and veneered designs and specify appropriate joinery;
- design and construct a piece of furniture with bent and veneer forms; and
- analyze projects through critiques, presentations, and discussions.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities:
- design cabinets and other furniture using bent forms and other laminating techniques
- study, draw, and employ jigs and fixtures for the creation of a bent and/or laminated wood form
- utilize materials and adhesives
- build and finish a piece of furniture using bent forms
- utilize finishes appropriately for the project
- demonstrate safe shop practices

Assessment Methods for Core Learning Goals:
- Course
- Course learning goals are assessed with group critiques of all projects, based upon successful design, execution, and completion of assigned woodworking projects.
- At least two individual critiques with instructor are held to assess projects using the above criteria and to review student’s overall progress.
- Instructor evaluation of tool and shop safety practices through observation and quizzes.
