This capstone course is for students in the Fine Arts transfer major, Graphic Design transfer major, and Fine Woodworking transfer major. Ideally, it should be taken one semester before the student's final semester in the program. Additional lab hours are required. Students may work with nude models. Studio courses can be expensive.
This course meets the General Education requirement for Oral Communication.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- Students develop and enhance their fine arts and design portfolio for transfer or employment. Also, students prepare and deliver an informative speech describing their work using appropriate vocabulary and/or historical references. Finally, students engage in class critiques of their work and the work of other students.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- produce projects to develop and enhance their portfolios;
- prepare a complete portfolio, including resume, cover letter, artist’s statement, and samples of their creative work;
- prepare and deliver an informative speech describing their work, using appropriate vocabulary and/or historical references [Oral Communication]; and
- demonstrate the process of constructive self-criticism and constructive criticism of others' oral presentations.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
Students will:
- collect their strongest, most developed examples of artistic and written work from completed studio/art history courses within the program of study (students will be provided with specific criteria and an assessment rubric);
- meet with instructor and create a personal plan for improvement and development of work based on specific transfer and/or employment goals;
- demonstrate an ability to properly mount or present their work, as appropriate;
- demonstrate an ability to properly light and photograph their work;
- develop a resume;
- compose an artist's statement and cover letter;
- prepare a complete portfolio;
- apply to transfer institutions and/or apply for employment;
- develop and present an informative, 7-10-minute oral presentation of their portfolio, explaining their ideas and their work to faculty and peers; and
- attend lectures presented by representatives from professional art schools related to transfer and possible employment in the arts.

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- At least two individual critiques with the instructor are held each semester to assess projects and to review students' overall progress.
- Students present their portfolios, and these then are critiqued through the use of a rubric by the class and by the instructor.
- The instructor assesses writing samples based on logic, clarity, neatness, and professionalism appropriate for a portfolio.
