Weekly homework required = 5 hours
VI. Catalog Course Description
This is an advanced class in painting, drawing, and mixed media. The final project will be based on interrelated ideas selected by the student with the approval of the instructor. Finished work, as well as preliminary studies, will be part of the professionally presented final project.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:
    1. identify an area of interest to pursue, with assistance from the instructor as needed.
    2. organize and plan methodology for this inquiry.
    3. explore the appropriate media(s) to best realize the potential of their chosen theme.
    4. appraise their own development weekly in dialogue with the instructor and with the class through critiques.
    5. analyze how the artist gives life and meaning to personal perception.
    6. research an artist that relates to their interest, write a paper about this artist, and give an oral presentation to the class.
    7. maintain a sketchbook to be reviewed bi-weekly.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. Examine the student�s perspective in the context of present and past artists.
    2. Integrate ideas from previous work and the work of contemporary and historical artists to begin to establish a conceptual basis in order to plan the project.
    3. Use drawing studies and color studies to inform work.
    4. Develop confidence and recognize that mistakes and failures are accepted as a natural and essential way to growth as a creative person.
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    This course is not in the core curriculum.
  4. Reference, Resource, or Learning Materials to be used by Student:

    The student will use source material from the library looking at various artists who have worked with similar subject matter. Reference books on painting techniques and color theory will be helpful. When possible, museum and gallery trips will be encouraged in order for the student to see the work of both the masters and also contemporary painters. See course format.
