- In addition to class studio time, students work five hours outside of class each week. Students may work with nude models in this course. This course meets the Arts/Humanities General Education Goals.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course introduces and explores various problems in painting often seen in the work of beginners, but also students with some experience. The medium is determined by the instructor. Students paint from models, still life, landscape, and imagination.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- practice the basic skills and experience with painting medium;
- explore the painting process by the use of traditional materials and techniques; and
- apply representational and/or abstract interpretations and principles to a project (Arts/Humanities).

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- learn how to mix and apply paint to a canvas
- explore the following areas of representation
- still life
- landscape
- figure
- interior
- learn how to stretch and size a canvas with emphasis on craftsmanship
- develop a composition from general to the specific through
- thumb nail sketches
- broad line drawing with paint on canvas
- color relationships
- clear rendering with texture and paint
- spatial relationships and proportions of objects to background
- light, using tone and color temperature
- explore elementary ideas about abstraction and intention
- provide a professional environment to work and study
- encourage the student to clear visual language during critiques
- plan and complete work within a deadline and in a professional manner

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Course learning goals are assessed via group critiques of all projects based on the successful design, execution, and completion of assigned projects.
- At least two individual critiques with the instructor are held each semester to assess projects, using the above criteria and to review students' overall progress.
- Student's portfolio is assessed for aesthetic quality and progress.
- Projects are assessed through critiques, oral presentations, and discussions.
