V. Other Pertinent Information
It is required that students have a 35mm SLR camera (capable of manual control/operation). There is a studio supply cost for this course listed in the catalog. Additional lab hours are required.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course emphasizes the development of a critical eye and the use of photography as a form of self-expression and an artistic medium. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of the photographic process. Students produce photographs as fine art and refine advanced technical and printing techniques.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    1. Course
    2. Students will:
      1. recognize and utilize additional language and terminology of photography beyond that of the basic level;
      2. demonstrate their creative, expressive, and aesthetic skills through the production of photographic imagery;
      3. apply various advanced technical skills, methods, and darkroom procedures;
      4. critically examine their own and other's technical and aesthetic aspects of their work through individual or class critiques;
      5. prepare their work for presentation (including exhibition, portfolio, and other presentation concerns); and
      6. build upon their appreciation of the history of photography and the significant contributions made by key photographers.

  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. creative use of the photographic medium
    2. student portfolio of work with personal imagery geared to a fine art application of the medium
    3. control the tonality of a print through the use of developers and toners
    4. traditional, fiber-based photo paper
    5. refine printing skills
    6. advanced methods of camera operation and accessories
    7. student and group critiques that examine the technical and aesthetic proficiency of photographs created in the course
    8. significant current contributors to the medium of fine art photography

    2. Student assessment is based on tests/quizzes, together with the successful completion of assigned projects, the presentation of projects, and critiques.
