VI. Catalog Course Description
This course is designed to explore the relationship of crime and violence to alcohol and narcotics use. Characteristics of individuals likely to use illicit drugs will be examined in the conflict between individual freedom and society's desire to control drug use, as well as facts and myths regarding the role alcohol and other drugs play in violent behavior. Strategies to combat the growing problem will be identified.

  1. Course Learning Goals

    1. To provide an overview of the role alcohol and other drugs play in acts of violence.
    2. To increase the understanding of the nature of crime associated with alcohol and other drug use and abuse.
    3. To identify the characteristics of individuals involved in deviant behavior focusing on the abuse of drugs and alcohol.
    4. To discuss ethnic, minority and socio-economic issues associated with alcohol and drug use and abuse.
    5. To explore community and governmental strategies to reduce the prevalence of alcohol and other drug related problems particularly in the area of crime and violence.

    1. Define drug and alcohol use versus abuse.
    2. Delineate the parameters of violence and crime and their connection to drug alcohol use.
    3. Discuss characteristics of individuals involved in violent and criminal behavior.
    4. Discuss ethnic and minority and socio-economic issues related to the use of drugs and alcohol and the relationship to violent behavior and crime.
    5. To discuss strategies in place to help deal with these issues and to develop ideas for different strategies.

    Published materials and instructor developed materials will be used. Video and audio tapes may also be used as well as outside speakers.
