- Successful completion of at least twenty-one (21) credit hours in Emergency Management (PUBS), Fire Science (FRSC), and Management (MGMT) or permission of the Business Studies Department and a GPA of 2.5 earned at Bucks County Community College
- V. Other Pertinent Information
- Students engaging in work with an outside agency as agreed upon among the student, the Business Studies Department, and the said agency.
- The number of hours in placement vary with the agency/department to which the student is engaged but in no case less than 100 hours of actual work experience.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- Students conduct field work directly related to their academic preparation and career objectives. The major areas of focus include partaking in actual field work, observing real-life situations of the working professional and his/her clients, and comparing academic theory to field work observations.
- VII. Required Course Content and Direction
Course Learning GoalsStudents will:
- Perform customary office duties for the career field;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts in the public safety occupation in both emergency and non-emergency situations;
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of terminology used on the job, as it relates to their internship;
- Demonstrate a respect for, and knowledge of, the use of materials, equipment, and services used at the internship;
- Compare and contrast academic theory to field work and procedures of host agency;
- Demonstrate practical knowledge, experience, and understanding of operations in given field; and
- Demonstrate attributes of general employability including initiative, promptness, dependability, courtesy, cooperation, cleanliness, safety, working effectively with others, and a sense of responsibility for activities and their outcomes.
Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- Participate in an internship meeting arranged by the course coordinator.
- Student maintains a log to register days, times, and total hours worked that is signed by the student and the student's immediate supervisor. The log, accounting for a minimum of 100 hours during the semester period, is turned in by the student to the course coordinator, who verifies the information with the employer and evaluates it as a part of the student's final grade.
- Complete a portfolio as defined by the course coordinator and submit one copy to his/her employer and one copy to the course coordinator, and keep one copy for his/her personal file.
- Receive an evaluation by employer using the criteria established by the course coordinator in conjunction with the employer's standards of performance.
Assessment Methods for Course Learning GoalsCourse learning goals are assessed by an evaluation of the student work log, completed portfolio, and resume submitted to their Course Coordinator. They are also evaluated by his/her employer using coordinated criteria that includes: an employer questionnaire survey and an employer interview.
