- This course fulfills a Personal Health Requirement in Category I: Essential Skills and Perspectives and the Category III requirements of the Core Curriculum at Bucks County Community College for Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving and Responsible Citizenship.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course is designed to guide the student to develop a personal fitness program utilizing concepts of muscle physiology and nutrition. Each student will be evaluated and an individual exercise and nutrition program will be recommended.
- VII. Required Course Content and Direction
- The student will learn valid concepts of exercise physiology and how to apply them to a chosen activity.
- The student will learn valid concepts of nutrition and how to apply them to his own diet.
- This course will emphasize that wellness is more than not being sick—it’s an approach to health that aims to reduce the risk of serious illness.
- This course will emphasize the importance of physical exercise as a means of maintaining wellness and preventing health problems in later life.
- This course will provide an understanding of the interactions among diet, stress, and physical exercise with wellness.
- This course will provide motivation for the student to make meaningful changes in his lifestyle to improve and maintain his health.
- This course will demonstrate through progression and self-improvement that exercise is self-fulfilling, organically beneficial and personally enjoyable.
This course satisfies the requirements for the BCCC Core Curriculum.

- Muscular metabolism
- Applied physiology of exercise
- principles of an exercise prescription:
- frequency, intensity, time
- overload, progressive resistance, specificity, recovery
- physiological effects of regular anaerobic exercise
- physiological effects of regular aerobic exercise
- Cross-training and how a variety of activities contribute to cardiovascular and total fitness
- The role of diet and nutrition – What is a quality diet?
- weight management and body composition
- cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis
- heat balance, fluid, and electrolyte consumption
- role of the nutrients in energy metabolism
- relationship among stress, diet, and exercise
- Concepts of recuperation, positive adaptation, and deconditioning
- immediate and correct care of athletic injuries

- How to critically review the current literature in the areas of nutrition and physiology of exercise
