- This course fulfills a Personal Health Requirement in Category I: Essential Skills and Perspectives and the Category III requirements of the Core Curriculum at Bucks County Community College for Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving and Responsible Citizenship.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course satisfies the transfer requirements for Physical Education majors. It is designed to meet all American Red Cross requirements. Students will receive certification in lifeguarding, first aid, and other appropriate certifications. Basic concepts of exercise physiology and nutrition will be presented.
- VII. Required Course Content and Direction
- The student will learn that lifelong wellness is achieved and sustained by practicing habits that include regular physical exercise, and proper nutrition.
- Lifeguard training will help the student learn the appropriate responses to swimming emergencies.
- The student will become more water safety conscious and he will learn first aid procedures and techniques in CPR respiratory emergencies.
- The student will learn valid concepts of exercise physiology and how to apply them to a chosen activity.
- The student will learn valid concepts of nutrition and how to apply them to his own diet.
- The student will learn to develop a personal exercise program in lifeguarding utilizing valid concepts of exercise.
- The student will be expected to critically review current training literature for the sport of lifeguarding and learn how to change his/her training, if necessary, to conform to new and scientifically valid concepts.
- The student will be expected to demonstrate an accurate knowledge of water rescues and swimming area safety management.
- The student will learn and be able to demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- The student will learn to demonstrate life threatening first aid procedures and non-life threatening first aid procedures.
- The student will become knowledgeable in the emergency medical system and learn how and when to activate the system.
- The student will learn the three leading causes of death in the U.S.A.
- The student will learn how to reduce the cause of death due to a heart attack.
- The student will learn CPR and choking maneuvers.
- The student will learn to understand the skills and knowledge needed to save a victim of cardiac arrest.
This course satisfies the requirements for the BCCC Core Curriculum.

- VIII. Teaching Methods Employed
- Classroom lectures, demonstrations, and student participation in first aid and CPR. Class periods in the pool are divided into mini lectures, and practice time. Some portion of the class is dedicated to student presentation.
