  6. Catalog Course Description

    Ear Training IV applies sight-singing and dictation to chromatic tonal relationships (including secondary dominants, modal mixture, Neapolitan and augmented sixth chords), modes, and non-diatonic scales (pentatonic, octatonic, and whole tone).
  7. Required Course Content and Direction

    1. Learning Goals:

      1. Course
      2. Students will:
        1. sight-sing melodies accurately and take musical dictation by applying compatible solfege methodologies; and
        2. sight-sing accurately and take musical dictation with regard to melodies and harmonies involving secondary dominants, modal mixture, Neapolitan, augmented sixth chords, modes, and non-diatonic scales (pentatonic, octatonic, and whole tone).

    2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities:

      1. practice applications of secondary dominants and modulation to closely-related keys, using movable-do chromatic solfege, as a brief, intensive review
      2. practice sight-singing and dictation involving chromaticism that employs augmented sixth chords and modulation to remotely-related keys; related notation and aural identification tasks
      3. practice sight-singing and dictation involving irregular and changing meters; related notation and aural identification tasks
      4. practice sight-singing and dictation involving diatonic modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian); related notation and aural identification tasks
      5. practice sight-singing and dictation involving non-diatonic scaler constructs (pentatonic, octatonic, and whole tone).
    3. Assessment Methods for Core Learning Goals:

      1. Course
      2. Course-specific content will be assessed via homework assignments, and sight-singing and dictation quizzes and exams. A departmentally-generated final comprehensive examination will be administered to assess all subject matter components that are detailed in the Learning Goals for this course.
