- MGMT111, 112, and 113 are presented in modules of five-week duration, each considering different problems.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- Current problems of general interest in small business are analyzed by students under the guidance of the instructor. The courses are presented in modules of five-week duration, each considering different problems.
- VII. Required Course Content and Direction
Learning Goals:Upon completion of this course the student will have an understanding of current problems facing the small business manager and possible solutions to these problems. Students will develop skills in the area of decision-making, research, writing, and communications.
Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities:
- Develop and analyze current problems of concern to the business manager.
- Analyze the decision making process and problem solving techniques used by a business manager.
- Cite means of improving employee productiveness.
- Identify techniques of managerial planning and control.
- Analyze the various techniques of good time management.
- Explain the importance of the business plan to the entrepreneur.
- Analyze and discuss the importance of major business financial statements.
- Discuss the importance of social marketing and the value of knowing your market.
- Indicate an awareness of techniques of staffing, developing employees and managing the worker.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key factors to consider before starting a small business.
- Demonstrate the ability to analyze and solve case problems relating to current issues in small business management.
- Develop skills in decision making and problem solving on an individual and group basis through the use of case studies.
- Develop and improve library research skills, writing and analytical skills by completing assigned term projects.
- Develop communication skills through the use of case study discussion and presentations of findings and implications of written assignments.

- VIII. Teaching Methods Employed
- Lecture and discussion on topics to satisfy listed course objectives (ie: Business Plan, Marketing Plan, Human Resource Management, Risk Management, and Social Responsibility, etc.)
- Students work in groups of 3 or 4 to analyze assigned case studies and present their findings to the class.
- Students individually and in groups analyze and determine the key points of value presented in videos. Results are discussed in class.
- Students are required to research current periodicals, newspapers, and the Internet in order to discover current issues facing small businesses. Students must summarize and list implications of research findings in writing. Class discussion of each report takes place using round table discussion.
- Students must summarize and be able to discuss the main issues presented in The One Minute Manager.
