This course introduces the student to the contemporary administrative issues that challenge managers in the Fire Service and Emergency Medical ServiceTopics include recruiting, legal issues, information management, long- range planning, budgets, and professional development.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. examine the human resource issues involved in managing a fire science or emergency medical service; and
    2. examine management duties, such as recruiting, law, and information management that are used currently in the fire service.

    1. the evolution of the Fire Service: seventeenth century to the twenty-first century
    2. an overview of fire department and emergency medical services organization and structures
    3. the organization and management of a fire department: theories and approaches
    4. alternative delivery systems for fire protection and emergency medical services
    5. planning for community fire protection and emergency medical services
    6. management information systems and data analysis
    7. evaluating community fire protection and emergency medical services
    8. budgeting, finances and cost containment
    9. legal issues for the fire service and emergency medical services
    10. personnel management: recruitment, retention, job classification, compensation, and personnel development
    11. labor management relations and negotiations
    12. emergency management: the role of the fire service and emergency medical services in mitigation and recovery
    13. improving life safety in the community through comprehensive fire prevention and fire code administration
    14. managing innovation
    15. the future of the fire service and emergency medical services
    16. developing training programs and the need for continuing professional development
