VI. Catalog Course Description
This course emphasizes developing greater proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing French through study of more complex language structure, reading and discussing current newspaper and magazine articles, listening to French radio broadcasts, viewing French television programs and film, reading more difficult literary texts, and deeper study of the culture and history of the French-speaking world. The texts chosen will vary from year to year.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Learning Goals:

    The course focuses on further reinforcing, refining, and expanding mastery of the essentials of effective communication. It also introduces some advanced grammar structures, provides more difficulty listening opportunities, and introduces more difficult authentic French texts, both literary and non-literary, to help students develop a better understanding of the culture, history, and sociology of the French-speaking world.

    The students explore world cultures and/or the complexities of gender and/or minority groups. They reflect upon the interrelation of diverse cultures and/or groups and the ways in which those perspectives broaden the scope of the studentsí understanding of identity.

    OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to

    1. articulate similarities and differences in the various cultures of the world and demonstrate familiarity with the skills necessary to make informed judgments.

    COLLABORATION

    The students learn to work effectively in small groups, to develop cooperative relationships among people of diverse ages and backgrounds, and to appreciate the responsibility inherent in working with others. They also learn that problems may have more than one possible solution.

    OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to

    1. practice effective small group communication skills.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities:

    The goal of this course is increased proficiency in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will work on these skills within a current and culturally-accurate context. Grammar structures will be reviewed as needed and more advanced grammar structures explained as they are encountered. Among these structures are the use of infinitives, double object pronouns, compound tenses, the subjunctive, and the passe` simple. There will be increased emphasis on vocabulary building and the use of idiomatically correct expressions; students will read more advanced, but authentic texts, including short stories, dramas, poetry, articles, and advertisements. Students will write frequent compositions, letters, and critiques. Students will also read articles taken from French periodicals and magazines, such as Le Monde, Liberation, Express, Le Nouvel Observateur, France-Amerique and Journal Francais both for their cultural and linguistic interest. Students will also listen to audio tapes and view video tapes, French television programs, and films. Each of these experiences will be followed by comprehension exercises, discussion, and a writing activity. The course will be conducted in French.

    A French proficiency-based review grammar text or advanced conversation book with accompanying audio and/or video tapes.

    A literary, historical and/or cultural reader on a high-intermediate or advanced level.
VIII. Teaching Methods Employed
Teaching methods will include grammar pattern exercises and will move to more open-ended responses. Group and pair work will be used to provide opportunities for oral practice and practice of communication skills. Students will continue to refine their pronunciation and spontaneous language production skills in dialogues, discussions, responses to questions and interviews. Students will continue to refine their listening and reading comprehension skills through assigned readings, class discussions, audio and video tape work. Extensive writing opportunities are provided. Active student participation is essential.

  • Evaluation of Student Work:

    Students are expected to spend at least 2 hours outside of class for every hour of contact time reviewing vocabulary, reading assignments, completing written work, listening to tapes, and preparing oral presentations.

    Students will be evaluated by means of quizzes, tests, oral and written presentations designed to measure oral proficiency, listening and reading comprehension, and grammatical accuracy. In general, each text will be accompanied by a written assignment. Each student will also participate in an interview with the instructor. Attendance and active participation are an important component in determining studentsí grades.
