- Students taking this course must be able to utilize skills in the backstage aspects of producing a play. At least one of the following may be required: carpentry, sound control, light control, scenery painting, stage crew, hanging lights. Work is likely to be scheduled at irregular times outside of regular class meeting times. Students are expected to work a minimum of 30 hours outside of class time in their backstage area of focus. Students are required to attend all technical and dress rehearsals. Students are required to attend all performances of the college production. Students' grades are based primarily on contribution to college production.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course, which is a continuation of Introduction to Theater Production, provides practical experience in technical and/or administrative aspects of theater as gained through participation in the department's major theatrical production during the semester.

Course Learning Goals
Students will be able to
- develop a better understanding of backstage skills required for producing a play; and
- develop greater proficiency in the specific area the student emphasizes, such as lighting design, sound design, or set construction.

Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities
- Backstage areas of focus include the following:
- Stage managing
- Hanging, gelling, and focusing lights
- Running lights
- Running sound
- Building scenery
- Building or gathering props and furniture
- Scene painting
- Running crew
- The student chooses one or more areas to concentrate upon, and works in the logical sequence toward the opening of the show. This work is supervised and taught by the instructor. The student is expected to work a minimum of 30 hours on the selected area(s).
