- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course provides a detailed study of the command line and graphic user interface of current desktop operating systems. Topics include basic and advanced commands, managing and backup of hard drives, system configuration, troubleshooting tools and booting. Additionally, there is a moderate study of the hardware components of the PC.

Course Learning Goals
- Course Students will:
- describe the features and purpose of a command line and graphical user interface (GUI) in an operating system;
- customize a system’s environment by placing appropriate commands in a batch file;
- illustrate the geometry of the hard drive and describe hard drive management, logical and physical file systems, and file management and backup techniques;
- change system settings by using both the Control Panel and the Registry; and
- describe the concept of network and use NET commands and selected TCP/IP protocols to initiate and manage a network connection.

- Basic Operating System Concepts
- Starting and shutting down the operating system and using either a command line prompt or GUI to control it.
- Starting, running, and closing program(s).
- Display the contents of a window and manipulation of the window's properties.
- Use of toolbar features.

- Using a text editor.
- Creating, saving, organizing, managing, and printing ACSII and binary files.
- Searching techniques and strategies for finding files and information.
- Command Line Concepts
- The role of the command line interface and using commands and switches.
- Redirection and piping of commands.
- Writing batch programs.
- Disk Management and Maintenance
- Managing files and file structures.
- Managing and backing up a hard drive.
- Differences between FAT file systems and NTFS.
- Troubleshooting
- Recovery tools.
- Troubleshooting the boot process.
- Understanding and Making Changes to the Registry

- Intranet and internet connectivity with peer to peer networks, client/server, and using NET commands.
