Restoration of Tyler Hall and Formal Gardens
Built between 1930 and 1932, Council Rock, now referred to as Tyler Hall, was the 60-room Norman Revival mansion of George Frederick, a Philadelphia banker, and Stella Elkins Tyler, a sculptress and patron of the arts. The estate was donated to Temple University in 1962 by Mrs. Tyler, who was a trustee of the University for 20 years. Tyler Hall and 200 acres of the former 2,000 acre Tyler Estate were acquired by the County of Bucks from Temple. Bucks County Community College officially opened its doors in September of 1965.
The Tyler Gardens were constructed in 1931 by the Tylers to provide a formal landscape setting for Council Rock. The gardens clearly demonstrated characteristics that were common in formal gardens in the Philadelphia area at this time. Mrs. Tyler envisioned the formal gardens as an extension of the main house where she could entertain in "rooms" created by trimmed hedges. In 1988, the Tyler Gardens and Council Rock were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Tyler Hall and Garden restoration, renovation and stabilization projects are funded through proceeds from the Tyler Tasting Party. Since its inception in 1988, this Foundation event has raised more than $500,000 toward restoring this mansion. Past projects included:
